What if Your Laptop Has No Sound?
Check Your Volume
It sounds obvious, but I don’t know how many times I accidentally muted Windows just to be annoyed and hit my forehead later. Click the speaker icon in the lower right corner of the Windows taskbar and make sure the volume is turned on. (If you have external speakers connected, make sure they are turned on.)
Drag and release the Windows volume slider and you should hear a “sound”. If not, the problem is elsewhere. If you hear a beep, the app you are trying to use may be disabled. Make sure the sound of your music player, video player, or other application you use is turned on and turned on.
The same is true for YouTube and other in-browser players. It can be accidentally disabled and can be difficult to diagnose later. For example, Chrome users can control audio playback from any tab by clicking the note icon in the browser menu.
Try Some Headphones
If you’re having trouble with your laptop’s built-in speakers, try plugging in headphones or speakers. If the sound works through them, there may be a hardware problem with the laptop’s built-in speakers.
If you have USB headphones (such as a USB gaming headset), try connecting them as well. You can bypass the default audio driver and indicate the cause of the problem.
Change Your Audio Device
The speakers may be functioning properly, but Windows is routing the audio to the wrong output device. This is especially common when you connect a USB audio device or an external HDMI monitor without speakers. ..
To fix this, right-click the speaker icon on the Windows taskbar, select Sound, and enter the sound settings. Select the Playback tab and find the device you want to use. If you don’t see it, try right-clicking and selecting the Show disabled devices check box.
Select the desired output device and click the Set Default button. If you’re not sure which one to use, try each device in the list until you hear a sound.
Disable Audio Enhancements
If you are experiencing audio issues, it is recommended that you disable any audio extensions that may be enabled. In the same Sound menu, select the audio device you’re trying to use and click Properties to see the options that appear.
Make sure that the correct formats supported are checked, that all extensions are disabled, and that Exclusive Mode is turned off on the Advanced tab. You can also try turning off spatial audio expansion. Play the sound again to see if any of these options are causing the problem.
Install or Update Your Drivers
If you are in doubt that some of your PC hardware is not working, check your drivers. Click the Start menu, type Device Manager, and press Enter to open the Control Panel. Scroll down to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers and expand the menu to see all the audio output devices available on your PC. If any of them have a yellow exclamation mark, it means that you may need to find and install the driver from the manufacturer’s website. If not, it’s worth installing the driver anyway.
You can also uninstall the driver. Right-click on the driver you are trying to use (in my case my laptop uses Realtek Audio) and select Uninstall Device. Restarting Windows will attempt to reinstall a generic driver that can restore the speakers to their original state.
Update Your BIOS
In rare cases, hardware incompatibilities, software updates, or Windows reinstallations may cause the sound to stop working and you may need to make some adjustments in the BIOS. Restart your computer and enter the BIOS / UEFI setup menu. Normally, you press Delete, F2, or another key at startup.
First, make sure your sound card is enabled in the BIOS. This is because it may be disabled at some point. If that doesn’t work, check the version of BIOS or UEFI you’re running and compare it to the latest version on the laptop manufacturer’s website.
If the manufacturer recently released a new version, it may be worth updating. Be sure to read the instructions and continue with caution, as accidental execution may also interrupt the BIOS update.
Repair the Speakers
If the software doesn’t solve the problem, the speakers themselves may be broken or the cables in your PC may be disconnected. If you find a repair manual for your PC, don’t be afraid to hack it to see what it is.
You can also call a specialist. If it is still under warranty, ask the manufacturer for repair or find the nearest shop where you can diagnose the problem. If you’re lucky, you’ll be jamming again soon.
