Is the monitor better at higher refresh rates?

If you’re looking for a game monitor, refresh rate is one of the most important factors. A higher refresh rate is not always required, as explained in the FAQ section below. Slow or cheap GPUs can’t take full advantage of high speed (> 120Hz) responsiveness, and some games improve performance at 60fps. However, if you want to play FPS games or the latest fast-moving games, you can choose one with a high refresh rate (75Hz or higher recommended).

What is a variable refresh rate (VRR) like GSync or AMD FreeSync?

GSync and AMD FreeSync do the same thing, but are designed for different graphics cards. The monitor refresh rate is fixed (60Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz, etc.). The GPU is responsible for displaying graphics on the monitor, and the rendering speed is variable (fully random). So what GSync / FreeSync does is match your monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU’s variable rendering speed.

This eliminates screen tearing, reduces input lag, and disables V-sync (which can reduce FPS).

3. Do I need to use GSync / FreeSync to play competitive games?

For competitive games, you need to minimize input delays. Consistently high FPS is required to reduce input lag. Also, to get consistently high FPS, you need a proper rig with a good graphics card.

The criteria for using GSync or FreeSync are as follows:

• 240+ FPS Consistently = Disable GSync (if you have the option, enable Ultra Low Motion Blur (ULMB)
• >240 FPS or inconsistent FPS = Enable GSync and limit frames to 236
• If you are using a 60Hz monitor, do not enable GSync.

However, the exceptions to the above rule are:

• If you want to prevent screen tearing, enable GSync / FreeSync.
• If you’re playing a game that requires fast action or pixel accuracy, turn off GSync / FreeSync.

Again, the goal is to reduce input lag while playing competitive games. Technologies like GSync / AMD FreeSync solve problems such as screen tearing, but they don’t always reduce input lag, and in some cases actually increase it.

Try the settings directly and feel the lack of GSync / FreeSync and GSync / FreeSync.

4. How to choose the right panel

When choosing a monitor, the type of panel is important and affects the display quality from different angles.

IPS (in-plane switching)

IPS panels are currently the most common panel, and you probably have an IPS panel right next to you. Smartphones use bright and colorful IPS panels. The screen remains bright from any angle, so your smartphone looks as clear as daytime from either side.

They have a good viewing angle, but not as high quality as IPS panels. Vertically placed panels usually have faster response times during gameplay.

TN (Twisted Nematic)

The TN panel is ideal for games as it targets higher refresh rates. Also, the response time is fairly fast, ranging from 1ms to 2ms. The viewing angle is worse than VA and IPS, and the color reproduction is also poor. These panel types are inexpensive, but keep in mind that they sacrifice display angle and color quality in favor of faster response times and better refresh rates.

My recommendation is that choosing an IPS or TN panel is the best option for your investment. This is because the balance between color and multi-angle displays outweighs the slight performance gains.

Do you really need a 4K monitor for your games?

This is a very common question and has a fairly detailed answer. 4k monitors generally look better because they have four times as many pixels as a 1080p monitor of the same size. Expect clearer images, deeper colors, and more contrast. But that doesn’t mean you need a 4k monitor to play.

It’s worth noting that most games actually look great on 1080p or Full HD monitors, and many game studios design their games to run on these monitors. Also note that many professional esports players prefer 1080p screens because they tend to have longer response times and shorter wait times.

It’s also easy to achieve high frame rates on 1080p screens, so if you’re playing a lot of fast-paced or demanding games, it’s better to look for Full HD than the acclaimed 4k brand. Probably.

Is it worth the money to pay for a 240Hz monitor?

The refresh rate (measured in Hz) indicates how often the monitor screen is updated every second. Many people think that the frequency of a monitor is a measure of its overall performance or quality, but this is a bit more complicated. The 60Hz monitor is only updated 60 times per second. This means that anyone using a 60Hz monitor can’t exceed 60fps in a game.

On the other hand, people using a 240Hz screen can enjoy up to 240fps, but the frame rate does not affect image quality or color. Therefore, if you are playing on high-end hardware that supports up to 240 fps, you need to monitor your refresh rate appropriately.

However, unless you’re playing a game where a high frame rate is important (single player games, MMOs, MOBAs, etc.), it’s okay to lower the refresh rate. Also note that the mismatch between the frame rate and the monitor refresh rate can cause tearing and jitter.

On the other hand, those who want to take a leisurely look at the scenery of The Witcher III and Cyberpunk 2077 may find themselves enjoying a much more accurate game monitor with more accurate colors.
